Annual Marketings by State, 1996

Iowa Markets Nearly One Quarter of the Nation's Hogs

The pie chart reillustrates the annual markets by state for the top 12 states and all others. It can be seen readily that Iowa markets nearly a quarter of America's hogs. North Carolina markets almost half as many hogs as Iowa. Do not be deceived into assuming that North Carolina has less hogs overall. In fact, NC farrowed more sows than Iowa less year. After the pigs are started, they are sent to Iowa for finishing because it is a lot cheaper to ship a pig to Iowa than to ship 600 lbs of grain from Iowa to NC to feed that pig out to market!
