Introduction to Growth Performance
The basic data needed to estimate growth performance are:
- Feed (Nutrient) Consumed
- Body Tissue Gained
- Time elapsed to market size
- Growth performance in the nursing phase is largely dependent on the sows' gestational and lactational feed intakes.
- Growth performance in the nursery phase is variable. Weaning pigs at around 21 days and ensuring adequate ambient temperature are very important factors along with the specialized quality protein diets.
- Attainment of high growth performance is critical in the grow-finish phase and producers try to exert considerable influence on growth performance in the grow-finish phase.
Growth performance is determined by:
- Gender
- Age
- Genetics: Genetic potential for growth is an important determinant of nutritional requirements.
