Venipuncture

In the smallest patients, venipuncture is accomplished using a 1cc syringe with a 25 or 28g needle, or an insulin syringe. Remember to remove the needle before putting the blood into tubes or on your slide to make smears. Use a hemostat to remove the needle from an insulin syringe.

Common venipuncture sites vary with each group of animals; it is important to have an understanding of the basic anatomy of each group, as well as individual species differences.
