CASE HISTORY, FLOCK #1

      Six week old broilers in a flock of 40,000 are having a mortality problem.  200 birds have died in the past 2 days.  Morbidity is 30%.  The serviceperson noticed the litter sticking to his feet.  Ventilation and temperature were good.  Water level was at the proper level and the waterers appeared clean.

 

CLINICAL SIGNS, FLOCK #1

      10 birds were presented for examination.  All  birds had diarrhea and were listless with ruffled feathers.

POSTMORTEM EXAM, FLOCK #1

Lesions were mainly confined to the intestinal tract.
8/10     microscopic exam of scraping of intestine revealed oocysts
5/10     large circumscribed white lesions on serosal surface
5/10     yellow-white ulcer (1-5mm) on mucosal surface
2/10     small yellow foci in liver
1/10     retained cartilage in the epiphyseal growth plate

 

Updated differential diagnosis (based on clinical history and postmortem findings) list the most likely first.
