DescriptionBaneberry is an erect plant with thick root stalks.  Fruiting stalks have red or white berries.
Geographic rangeFound in most of North America, excluding the desert southwest. Thrives in moist woodland soils.
Toxic principle is unconfirmed.  Actaea contains berberin in addition to other unidentified compounds.
ToxicityFoliage and fruit are moderately toxic
Diagnosis

Clinical signs. Digestive disturbances including vomiting, diarrhea, and colic.  Neurologic signs of weakness and seizures. Cardiac signs.

LesionsEdema of the intestinal serosa, congestion of abdominal viscera.  Splotchy hemorrhages in intestinal and endocardial serosa.

TreatmentSymptomatic treatment to relieve irritant effects on the digestive tract and any additional effects on the nervous system and heart.
