Why are there borders around the lettter graphics?

If you are seeing floating borders around a lot of the graphics and letters, it is probably because you are using Mosaic.

The graphics you are seeing with the floating borders around them are called "Transparent GIFs" - meaning that they are created so that background color of the graphic exactly matches the background color that the browser uses. This results in the illusion that the graphic is floating on the background. However, the background is really there.

Unfortunately, Mosaic outlines every graphic with a border. So it makes a nice neat square around the graphics. In this case however, because the background color of the graphic matches the background color of Mosaic, it looks like you've got a big floating square around the graphics. There is nothing you can do about it in Mosaic. To eliminate this problem you must switch to Netscape. There are instructions available to help you download the newest version of Netscape from NCSA.
