The Red Eye

The red eye is a common clinical sign that is a manifestation of several or combinations of many ocular disorders. Even though many ocular disorders result in a red eye, knowing a list of causes for a red eye will aid in forming a list of differential diagnoses.

The red appearance to the eye may be the reason the owner suspects that there may be a problem. Knowing and understanding the above list of causes for a red eye will empower the clinician and is the first step in managing the affected patient.

The list to the left is of causes for a red eye, based on the outward or external appearance of the eye.
