Scintigraphy can be useful in identifying and differentiating between periostitis (bucked shins) and dorsal cortical fracture. In horses with periostitis, there is moderate uptake associated with the long portion of the dorsal cortex, whereas in horses with fracture, focal increased radioisotope uptake is seen.
