A Radiolucent Lesion on the Third Metacarpal Bone
Figure 51 demonstrates a radiolucent (osseous cyst-like) lesion along the distal aspect of the third metacarpal bone. This particular animal was sound and racing successfully and had similar cystic changes in both front fetlocks. Because this is certainly an abnormality that could produce a lameness in the future, I would have to be pessimistic about the horse's future. There is no doubt that many horses are able to race and perform successfully with these kinds of changes but knowing that they can produce a lameness must influence one's decision.
