Stage 1
Stage one of parturition is not marked by a specific event so it is hard to know exactly when it begins. During this stage the mare becomes physically uncomfortable because of the activity of the foal. Throughout majority of gestation the foal is in a dorsopubic position but, in order to be delivered in the proper anterior longitudinal position, the foal must rotate into a dorsosacral position. This stage can last for half an hour up to six hours.
