LARGE ANIMAL EMERGENCY SERVICE INITIAL ASSESSMENT

ABSOLUTELY!!

Almost every emergency case has a catheter inserted to facilitate the administration of fluids or medication. In particular colic cases often come in severely dehydrated. In these severe cases of dehydration, you may even want to administer fluids into both jugular veins. A 9 French Cook catheter is a good choice. This is larger than the average 14 Gauge catheter that is normally used.

This horse is dangerously violent in her reaction to her pain. If you have not already done so, you should go ahead and sedate her.
