Magnetic resonance imaging provides superior soft-tissue detail compared to other imaging modalities.  The following MR images depict the left thoracic limb of the horse.    These images are proton-density weighted MR images.  Tissues that are high in proton content- such as fat- appear white.  Tissues that are low in proton content- such as mineral- appear black.  Therefore, coritcal bone appears white, bone marrow appears white, fluid appears black, and dense connective tissue structures such as tendons appear as dark grey.
