High
Speed Treadmill Exercise Protocol
During peak
exercise, a horse moves 75 liters per second through the URT
and creates a negative pressure of 45 cm of water in the trachea. At
rest,
the horse only moves 4 litres per second and creates just 5 cm of
water
in the trachea. It should be readily apparent that conditions
existing at peak exercise and rest in the URT are very different. The
dynamic evaluation of horses for poor performance includes the use of a
high-speed treadmill.
