Thiacetarsamide   sodium

 Chemical group: Arsenical

Trade names: Carparsolate Sodium  - no longer sold in the United States

Mode of action: Unknown, presumably due to the arsenic’s effect on glycolysis.

Pharmacokinetics: Elimination half life in dogs is about 46 min, it is metabolized by the liver.

Dose: 2.2 mg/kg BID for two days (IV).

Toxicity: 3.7 mg/kg daily for 3 days produced serious side-effects in 1/3 of the dogs tested. Side-effects at the standard dose increase with the clinical severity of the heartworm disease.

Parasite Targets: Dirofilaria immitis adults.
