Pyrantel Pamoate,  Pyrantel embonate

Chemical group: Imidazothiazole

Trade names: Nemex II, Strongid T, Pyratabs, D-Worm, Evict Liquid wormer, Sure Shot, Drontal1Drontal Plus2, Heartgard Plus3, etc.

Mode of action: Acetylcholine agonist and depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agent. It produces rigid contraction of the muscles. It appears to act on the nerve ganglia and nematode muscle cell membranes.

Pharmacokinetics: 40% of soluble salts (pyrantel citrate) passes in urine as metabolites, the rest passes in the feces unchanged. Most of the pamoate/embonate salts remains in the gut and will pass in the feces.

Dose: 5 mg/kg (PO) Use in animals over 2 weeks of age.

Toxicity: Cats: 100 mg/kg daily for 3 days produced no side effects, a single dose of 230.6 mg/kg produced vomiting and diarrhea in 2/92 cats.

Dogs: Acute LD50 dose is over 690 mg/kg, dogs given 20 mg/kg daily for 3 months had no problems, although dogs given 50 mg/kg for the same length of time did have signs of toxicity.

Parasite Targets: hookworms, ascarids, Physaloptera sp. (Stomach worm in cats and dogs)
