Metronidazole

Chemical group: 5-nitroimidazole

Trade name: Flagyl

Mode of action: Reduced in anaerobic organisms to reactive metabolites which release superoxide anions.

Pharmacokinetics: Rapidly and completely absorbed from gut. Some returns to the gut in the bile and through the colon, most is excreted in the urine. Will pass in the milk.

Dose: 30 mg/kg, SID, for 5 days (PO)

Toxicity: Dog can tolerate doses of 100 mg/kg per day for a month. Higher doses produce neurological signs (tremors, ataxia, etc.)

Parasite Targets: Giardia spp., Trichomonas spp.
