Rhabdomyosarcoma

A malignant tumor of striated muscle.

Gross Appearance:
•In the cat, rhabdomyosarcoma is a rare variant of postvaccinal sarcomas

Histology:
•Loosely arranged, disorganized, variably-sized pleomorphic cells
•Often with hyperchromatic nuclei
•Deeply eosinophilic cytoplasm
•Hallmarks of the tumor are so-called "racket" and "strap" cells
•Diagnosis depends on immunostaining for myogenic components (eg. desmin and myoglobin)
