Myxoma

A tumor characterized by an abundant myxoid stroma rich in mucopolysaccharide, in which fusiform and stellate neoplastic cells are present.

Gross Appearance:
•Difficult to identify tumor borders 
•Tissue is soft and mucoid
•Strands of mucus are adherent to all surfaces and instruments used to transect the mass

Histology:
•A mucinous matrix which has a pale basophilic appearance in H&E is the major component of the tumor 
•Cells vary from small fusiform to stellate in morphology
•Nuclei are hyperchromatic
•Ends of the fusiform cells taper to a fine point
•Stellate cells may have a more discernible central oval nyperchromatic nucleus
•Cytoplasmic processes are often pronounced
