Subungal Epithelial Inclusion Cyst

Simple cyst lined by a stratified squamous epithelium which is present within the bone of the third phalanx.

Histology:
•Cyst is identical to that described for infundibular cyst, but is surrounded by the bone of the third phalanx:
•Cyst present within the bone of the third phalanx
•Basal, spinous and granular cell layers may all be well developed
•Cornified cells that occupy the cyst may be loosely packed (basketweave orthokeratosis) or tightly compressed (compact orthokeratosis)
•Bone will exhibit pressure lysis proportional to the size of the cyst
•Rupture of the cyst wall will evoke a granulomatuos response
