Eccrine Carcinoma

A malignant tumor showing differentiation to eccrine secretory epithelium.

Gross Appearance:
Arise on the foot pads.  An infiltrative nodular neoplasm.

Histology:
•Very uncommon tumor
•Differentiation of eccrine carcinoma from apocrine carcinoma is exceedingly difficult and requires knowledge of the site of origin of the tumor (footpad in dog and cat) for a definitive diagnosis
•Neoplastic cells may have a pale eosinophilic cytoplasm and small hyperchromatic nuclei, suggesting thaey are differentiating to eccrine glandular epithelium
•In the dog, the glandular, papillary or cribiform aggregates of carcinoma cells are surrounded by a sclerotic stroma
•Must be differentiated from metastatic carcinomas
