Patent Ductus Arteriosus

The ductus arteriosus, shown encircled with suture on the specimen on the left, extends from the pulmonary artery ventrally to the aorta dorsally, bypassing the lungs in fetal circulation. After birth the blood oxygen tension increases, causing the ductus to constrict and eventually become the ligamentum arteriosum, shown encircled on the specimen on the right, that normally persists in adult dogs.
