Non-rebreathing Systems

Introduction

When putting small patients on a rebreathing system, there is concern about equipment dead space and resistance to breathing. To overcome these concerns, non-rebreathing systems were developed. The usual recommended weight for switching from a rebreathing system to a non-rebreathing system is between 5 and 10 kilograms.

Concern about the equipment dead space is resolved by using smaller diameter breathing hoses which have a smaller Y-piece. A smaller Y-piece has less dead space. Modern circle systems have valves that move easily. Studies have shown no differences in cardio-pulmonary and anesthetic measurements between small patients on circle systems or non-rebreathing systems.
