Anesthesia breathing equipment is the part of the anesthesia machine that acts as an interface between the gas outflow of the machine and the patient. The systems discussed on this website are divided into two main categories:
Non-rebreathing systems are circuits without carbon dioxide absorbers and require specific flows to prevent rebreathing. Previously exhaled gas from the patient is not rebreathed by the patient. VHUP uses the non-rebreathing system for patients less than 2 kilograms.
Rebreathing systems are circuits with carbon dioxide absorbers and can function over a wide range of flows. Previously exhaled gas is rebreathed by the patient.
